Historical fiction is my absolute favorite book genre! I got into historical novels in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. I had been looking for some new books to read and when I saw that a shutdown was approaching I rushed to the library to stock up on books.
I wasn't too sure what I wanted to read but I knew I wanted to change up my reading game quite a bit. While trying to figure out what series to checkout I remembered reading a book about Queen Elizabeth the first that was very enjoyable, so I began my hunt for books along those lines.
The first book I chose happened to be about Elizabeth and it was so good that I haven't read any other genre since. Hopefully this edition of Blogs by MeMe can help you find a historical fiction book that you will forever love and cherish.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory is my absolute favorite book in the whole world. It is set in Tudor England during the reign of King Henry VIII. The main character is Mary Boleyn, sister of the famous Queen Anne Boleyn.
This novel gives an account of their lives from when they are children to when they are adults. It gives an intriguing insight into the minds of their powerful family members and how they maneuvered in the English and French courts in this time period.
The Other Boleyn Girl explains the rise and fall of the Boleyn family with the perfect amount of details to keep any reader interested and desiring more.
The Lady Elizabeth by Alison Weir is the best book I've read about Queen Elizabeth I. It is different from most novels about Elizabeth because this one doesn't tell of her reign but her of childhood up until right when she comes to the throne.
It gives an intriguing and daring outlook on the Seymour and Elizabeth scandal while providing us with the main character's innermost thoughts and feelings.
If you are looking for a book to provide you with information on Elizabeth's childhood and upbringing then I highly recommend The Lady Elizabeth.
The Daughters of Rome by Kate Quinn is one of the best Roman Empire novels I have ever read. This story takes place in Rome in The Year of The Four Emperors. The main characters are four women: Marcella and Cornelia who are sisters, and their two cousins Lollia and Diana.
It tells a tale of how four women used their wit and charm to survive during this catastrophic time period. Through heartbreaks, fights, and life-threatening situations these women stayed strong and became the inspiration for a story that one will never forget.
The Devil's Queen by Jeanne Kalogridis tells of the life of Queen Catherine de Medici. It gives insight into her tumultuous childhood in Italy while providing info about her powerful family members. The majority of the story is about her reign in France, and her dabble with astrology.
This novel is packed with action, intrigue and magic. If you are looking for an exciting read with historical content then this book is perfect for you.
Cleopatra Confesses by Carolyn Meyer is the best book I have read on Cleopatra. A lot of her story is lost in history but the author takes what is known add creates a story that makes sense and adds up with the known facts. The story starts with her childhood and proceeds until the end of her reign.
It is a thrilling novel that will make you want to root for this Egyptian queen the whole time. The wisdom and determination of Queen Cleopatra is cleary shown in this novel and it lacks for nothing when it comes to entertaining, historical books.
